Summit County Utah Announces Two New Facilities at the Three Mile Canyon Landfill

landfill-picture.jpgCOALVILLE, UTAH – Two new resource recovery facilities will be available for use by county residents at the Three Mile Canyon landfill.

Summit County is constructing a new public drop-off center for residents just inside the entrance to the municipal landfill.

Residents using the drop-off facility can now recycle by separating their materials: 1) yard waste, 2) lumber, 3) metals, 4) corrugated cardboard, 5) carpet and carpet padding, 6) plastics, and 7) general household trash.

The new drop off facility will replace the system where mixed trash and recyclables has been dumped directly by residents at the landfill face.

The new facility will be cleaner, safer and more convenient for County residents and will facilitate the recycling of material into reusable products.

Loads delivered to the facility must be covered or they will be subject to double fees.

The Three Mile Canyon landfill is located off of State Route 32 opposite the Rockport Reservoir and is open Monday-Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm. The landfill is closed Sundays and New Years Day, the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The County is also establishing a permanent household hazardous waste collection facility at Three Mile Canyon, which utilizes a state-of-the-art trailer. The following household hazardous materials will be accepted:

• Paints, solvents and woodworking supplies including paint thinners and strippers, stains and finishes

• Automotive products including antifreeze, used oil, brake and transmission fluid, car batteries, tires, gasoline, diesel, and fuel additives, solvents, and degreasers

• Household cleaners including polishes and cleaners, drain openers, oven cleaners

Fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides • Rechargeable batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, and neon tubes

• Pool and spa chemicals

• Mercury-containing items including switches, thermostats, smoke detectors and thermometers

• Propane and white gas fuel cylinders

• Film developing chemicals, acids insect repellents

Both the public drop-off and hazardous waste facilities will be open during working hours. There will be no charge for residents to dispose of hazardous waste materials.

Electronic and computer waste continues to be accepted at Recycle Utah at 1951 Woodbine Way in Park City, seven days a week from 10 am to 4 pm. Recycle Utah is closed the same holidays as the landfill.
