A country long known for its beautiful beaches, lush rain forests, and vibrant culture, Brazil has recently developed a reputationfor corrupt politicians, kidnapping, and plastic surgery. By artfully connecting these seemingly disparate elements, first-time director Jason Kohn’s Manda Bala examines the tragic domino effect that has reshaped the face of the country and created an entire industry built on corruption. With a stylish score, lush imagery, and probing interviews with kidnappers, kidnap victims, and the people who profit off of them, this is a film that reveals the Brazilian reality that corruption and kidnapping represent two sides of the same violent coin: the rich steal from the poor while the poor steal the rich. Followed by a discussion of the film and the state of documentary filmmaking with director Jason Kohn and 2007 Sundance Film Festerival Juror, Carlos Sandoval.
