On December 8th and 9th, 2006 bobsled history was made at the Utah Olympic Park in Park City, UT. National Ability Center athletes Aaron Lanningham and Matt Profitt became the first athletes with disabilities to forerun a World Cup bobsled event. Aaron, the driver has paraplegia and Matt, the break man, is a below the knee amputee. As a result of their success the National Ability Center bobsled team has been invited to participate in the America’s Cup this weekend. More…

How is Hippotherapy different from over the traditional clinical setting?
Hippotherapy takes the patient out of the traditional clinical setting and places them into a more relaxed, yet stimulating atmosphere in order to help them meet their functional goals. Patients are in a natural environment, which may help integrate their needs into everyday life experiences. Children, who are sensitive to being “different”, do not consider the riding environment to be a clinic. They are more motivated to participate in their treatment when on horseback. The emotional benefits of being able to ride and perform well on a horse are enormous - very often the patient develops a better self image due to their ability to participate in an enjoyable activity in a natural setting. In time, they may improve and be able to transition from hippotherapy to a therapeutic riding program once their functional goals have been met.

The National Ability Center has an extensive skiing program for individuals with disabilities. Over the past few years a number of our participants have advanced to the level of competing nationally. This has led to the development of the Park City Disabled Ski Team (PCDST), a program of intensive training and coaching specifically for ski racers with physical disabilities.
