NAC Hosts First Hamlet Cup Learn to Race Camp

February 17th - 19th, 2007 the
National Ability Center hosted the first Hamlet Cup Learn to Race Camp at the Park City Mountain Resort, sponsored by The Hamlet Companies. The camp was designed for youth with physical disabilities between ages 8-16. The camp covered basic skiing skills, ski racing techniques and tactics, and focused on overall improvement.  Skiers trained in level one race gates, free-skied, practiced race drills, and competed in a race on the final day of camp.  In addition to skiing, the campers participated in other activities at the NAC.  Whether the skiers were eager to begin a racing career or just wanted to improve their skiing, the camp definitely helped them achieve their goals and, most importantly, have fun!

NAC hopes the Jr. Race Camp will help to encourage and motivate young athletes to join the sport of ski racing. The National Ability Center sponsors both a Jr. Race Team as well as the Park City Disabled Team, a development program for athletes with goals of joining the U.S. Disabled Ski Team. “This year’s Jr. Race Team is really taking off,” said coach, Maca Leontic.  The team consists of five athletes Tod Apedaile, Sam Blakley, Jordan Koyle, Kaleb Blackham and Garret Walkenhorst.  The team has been training really hard.  Many of the team members have dreams of making it to the Park City Disabled Ski Team.
