Park City Performing Arts Center Presents - Duncan Sheik, February 2, 2008

duncan-sheik.jpgPARK CITY, UT – Grammy-nominated, Tony Award-winning singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik brings his indie rock sound to The Eccles Center on Saturday, February 2.

Sheik’s breakout 1996 tune, “Barely Breathing” topped the charts for 30 weeks; however, the Buddhist-intellectual’s path has most recently led to Broadway. His score for the popular musical “Spring Awakening” (with lyrics by Steven Sater) has earned several Tonys, recognition from the New York Drama Critics’ Circle as well as a Grammy nomination. Blossoming in the theatrical limelight, he’s also making waves with a second Sater collaboration on the musical “The Nightingale.”

Though currently basking in the toast-of-Broadway glow, Sheik has built up an impressive solo career. The San Francisco Chronicle described his string of five pop-rock albums as a combination of “brittle balladry with literate optimism.” Educated at Andover and Brown, Sheik has brushed with the top 40 as well as the Sundance set. He’s composed music for a slew of television and film scores, such as “Great Expectations,” “ER,” Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park and his own alternative rock albums.

According to a Variety review of the performer, “Sheik is a good old-fashioned folk rocker in search of an evocative shimmering electric guitar line to ride above his acoustic rhythm guitar setting a steady, mid-tempo pace. He sings about the here and now with his heart on his sleeve, not afraid to show anger or love.”

Despite his recent rise to the role of Broadway’s darling, Sheik shines just as brightly when cast in the spotlight with microphone at hand. As PCPAF executive director Teri Orr puts it, “Duncan Sheik is a talented composer, and when given the chance to perform his own music, he rocks.”

Duncan Sheik’s tour stops in Park City for one night only.
