Park City Performing Arts Center Presents - Julia Sweeney: Letting Go of God

julia-sweeney-letting-go-of-god.jpgPARK CITY, UT – It’s Pat! Okay, not really. Though the actress-writer-comedienne broke into show biz with her Saturday Night Live portrayal of the androgynous character, Julia Sweeney brings a remarkably fresh one-woman show to The Eccles Center on Saturday, Dec. 1.

Funny and poignant, Sweeney’s latest hit on the comedy circuit, “Letting Go of God” chronicles her journey from belief in God to, well, letting go. The tale begins with the arrival of two Mormon missionaries upon her doorstep, which sparks an unexpected and hilarious exploration as she grapples with her own thoughts on religion, God and the nature of self. In the process, she rejoins the Catholic Church, studies Buddhism, treks the monasteries of the Himalayas, embraces the New age ideas of Deepak Chopra and ponders the scientific method.

Critics tout Sweeney’s one-woman show for its blend of humor and open-minded, intellectual adventure. According to The New York Times, “‘Letting Go of God’ is refreshingly unrancorous, lucid and, yes, inspirational” while the Los Angeles Times calls the show “a gale-force breath of fresh air into the mostly politic dialogue about religion in our time.” Ira Glass incorporated “Letting Go of God” into his show, “This American Life,” and reported, “An excerpt of this show is the single most popular story we’ve ever put on our show in ten years on the air.”

“Letting Go of God” is Sweeney’s third monologue. The previous two, “God Said Ha!” and “In the Family Way,” met critical acclaimed (and “God Said Ha!” was also made into a film, produced by Quentin Tarantino). In addition to her four-year stint on Saturday Night Live, Sweeney has been nominated for a Grammy for best comedy album and has appeared in a number of diverse roles, from Pulp Fiction to guest-starring on Sex in the City.

Sweeney’s one-woman comedy show stops in Park City for one-night only.
