Eclectic, fresh and thoroughly entertaining – Park City Performing Arts Foundation proudly announces a diverse line-up of nationally and internationally acclaimed artists for the 2006-2007 Season at The Eccles Center. Following a record-breaking summer of outdoor concerts at Deer Valley Resort, the non-profit enters its 10th Eccles season with the same philosophy as the past nine: to entertain, to enlighten and to present top quality performances that audiences would not otherwise experience in Utah. This season’s mix of dance, music, theater and family entertainment ranges from Wynonna (performing alongside the Utah Symphony) to The Animal Guys – with everything from Chinese acrobats to Celtic jigs in between. “Our sponsors continue to up the ante. Each season promises to be better than the last and this, our tenth, features performers of an extraordinary caliber,” commented PCPAF executive director Teri Orr. “There are some thoughtful, cultural experiences to be had at the Eccles Center this coming season, and we made sure there would be plenty of fun as well.”

Another fresh musical group, The East Village Opera Company, fills the stage with an unlikely – yet thoroughly delightful – mix of rock and opera on Jan. 13. Comprised of a five-piece band, string quartet and two vocalists, this cutting edge company adds a 21st century twist to operatic masterpieces (from Carmen to Turandot).

Back by popular demand, Park City Performing Arts Foundation will produce and present an encore performance of Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues” as a part of Vagina Monologues on Feb. 3. Featuring local readers, V-Day is at once humorous, poignant and tragic as it raises awareness about violence against women around the world. Proceeds from Park City’s V-Day will benefit The Peace House (a local shelter for victims of domestic abuse).

Singer/songwriter/pianist Marc Cohn burst onto the scene in 1991 on the
heels of “Walking in Memphis,” one of the most personal, resonant songs to make the Top 40 in the past 20 years. The song’s remarkable power to move listeners while eluding precise explanation is a hallmark of the highest songwriting art and, just as remarkably, it was a monster hit that abides on radio playlists to this day. According to singer David Crosby, “I think Marc cohn is easily in the top half-dozen talents in the world.”

The stage will transform from back-porch hootenanny to exquisite 27-centuries-old gallery the following weekend as the Chinese Golden Dragon Acrobats mix traditional dance, acrobatics, spectacular costumes and ancient and contemporary theater in a spellbinding show. As the Washington Post puts it, “There is precision and beauty about everything these performers do.” The Eccles celebrates Chinese New Year with the acrobats on Feb. 17.The stage will transform from back-porch hootenanny to exquisite 27-centuries-old gallery the following weekend as the Chinese Golden Dragon Acrobats mix traditional dance, acrobatics, spectacular costumes and ancient and contemporary theater in a spellbinding show. For those who prefer the traditional interpretation of the classics, Bernadette Peters performing alongside the Utah Symphony will fit the bill. This renowned actress, singer and comedienne boasts versatility and phenomenal vocals as well as Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Golden Globe awards. According to The New York Times, “Peters has no peer in musical theater right now.” The Broadway star takes to the stage on Mar. 24.

Traditionally the month for Celtic celebrations, March also welcomes Gaelic Storm to the stage. The high-spirited band that helped Jack and Rose kick up their heels in the blockbuster “Titanic” has blossomed into a mainstream, Irish-flavored phenomenon. “Gaelic Storm is a whirlwind ruckus, able to knock out an homage to the ocean and to whiskey in a theater, pub or barge,” writes The Village Voice. The jigs and reels will fill the theater on Mar. 31.
