Whitney Houston Teaches Us About Prescription Drugs and Addiction
With the recent death of Whitney Houston, it has again focused attention on the problems we face with presription drugs and addiction. This is not just a problem in Hollywood or in big cities but within our community as well. The article recently published in The Park Record concerning the death of Sheila Kirst’s son from a herion overdose helps to shine a light on problems faced in every community in America. So many people believe that if a doctor gives you a prescription for a pill then you are safe. No worries about addiction. In the two cases shown above we know this is just not the case. People today think that if one pill is good than two must be better or maybe three or four. Until society realizes that addiction can come in many forms and not just from illegal drugs or alcohol we are all at risk of loosing someone we love. In fact more teenagers today are using prescription drugs than street drugs for their “feel good” high.
It is my hope that everyone, not just parents, take an interest in the kids in our lives and try to keep them safe by watching behavioral changes or other symptons that are so easy to write off as normal coming of age behavior.
