October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month!

domestic-violence-victum.jpgOctober is the month to help stamp out Domestic Violence. This misunderstood problem ranks high in the untimely death of women in the United States. The perception continues to be that this is a problem in lower income families and “doesn’t happen in my neighborhood.”

This is completely false. Domestic partners of both genders and in all walks of life suffer from this silent crime. Look around you and reach out to a friend that seems to have unexplained bruises or is withdrawing from friends and family. Make sure they are safe and aware that there is help out there.

 Key statistics: Intimate partner violence made up 20% of all nonfatal violent crime experienced by women in 2001.

84% of spouse abuse victims were females, and 86% of victims of dating partner abuse at were female.

In 2000, 1,247 women and 440 men were killed by an intimate partner. In recent years, an intimate partner killed approximately 33% of female murder victims and 4% of male murder victims.
