US Teachers Deserve More!
Many of you have been aware of the Government Pension Offset program, which basically disallows educators from enjoying their social security benefits. Most people are shocked to find out that people who decide to make education their second career, also loose their social security, while not enjoying a healthy STRS retirement. Many teachers also must pay for personal health insurance as some districts do not include any assistance in the benefit package.
The Social Security Fairness Act has been reintroduced in the U.S. congress as H.R. 82. This bill would repeal the pension offset program. It is so important to many in our Congress, that it was introduced on the first day of the new Congress and has 169 Reps signing on. The Senate version, S. 106, was introduced on January 9, with 8 co-sponsors.
Please contact your senator and ask him/her to add their name to the list. Contact your representative to let them know you support this bill. Finally, write a note to your newspaper or to other people to let them know of your support.
Those who have made teaching our second career, thank you.
